BRUCH: Violin Concerto N 1 in G Minor
Yehudi Menuhin, violin
MENDELSSOHN: Symphony N 4 in A, "ITALIAN"

$12.00 per CD

Incredible performances and transfers of these very popular  works.  Charles  Munch, Yehudi Menuhin and the BSO Give us a performance of the 1951 recording  of the Bruch Concerto that is top notch.   Koussevitzky and the BSO  let loose  again but this time in the 1947 Carnegie Hall recording of the Mendelssohn "Italian".  In Carnegie Hall, the BSO sounds similar to the NBC under Toscanini until Roger Voisin blares forth in the heralds at the end of the first movement.   HQ MP3 sample here

The Vienna playing and musical traditions speak loudly and clearly with these performances as you would expect from all Scherchen recordings of the early 1950s.    The sound of both of these recordings was greatly improved.   Balances between piano and orchestra have been greatly improved to a more realistic standards.  The "Unfinished is from a Supraphon LP

A  paring of two unique Scherchen recordings on one CD.  The approach  to the Beethoven is deliberate adding to the drama that is often overlooked in this music by senseless quick tempi.  For the Beethoven 7th we have a mint quality green label LP - the  earliest issue; and for the Brahms a mint red label LP to make the transfers.  This CD is 70 plus minutes in the service  of music.

The famous mono 1954 Antal Dorati recordings are back!  Some say these performances  are better than the stereo remakes which were done four years later.  These old recordings never sounded as good as what is on this latest LP to CD transfer.   The "Italien" and the elusive "Romeo" with the CSO sound  better than ever.   HQ MP3 sample here

RACHMANINOV: Vocalise
RIMSKY-KORSAKOFF: The Battle of Kershenetz
MUSSORGSKY: Prelude to Khovanshchina

$12.00 per CD

The elusive 1949 BSO/Koussevitzky recording of the Tchaikovsky 4th transferred to CD from a 1st Edition RCA Victor LP.  The original sound is typical of the RCA era but improved greatly in terms of dynamic range  and overall sound.  This is considered the best of the several session recordings of Koussevitzky conducting this familiar Tchaikovky symphony. The Rachmaninov is splendid and boasts the lush string section of the BSO in 1945.  The other works were recorded in the 1930's and were transferred from new-condition, RCA Victor 78's.
